The card game The War of Art was created during the 48-hour Culture Game Jam 2024 in collaboration with Florentin Luca Rieger.
The theme of the game jam was all about culture — culture and tourism. In collaboration with the Belvedere Vienna, four challenges were presented, from which each team could choose one. Our team took on Challenge 1: NPC & AI, in which the famous military commander and art collector Prince Eugene of Savoy had to be part of the game as an NPC.
Step into the shoes of a noble and test your luck in a card game against the cunning Prince Eugene of Savoy. The prize? The finest art plundered in war.
Black Jack Plus. The card game is an extended version of the classic Black Jack. The difference here is that the game is played up to 20 points, and each player can play five hand cards with modifiers ranging from -4 to +4 to adjust their own score.
ChatGPT Integration. The AI uses the ChatGPT API. It's not only responsible for Eugene's moves, but also reacts to events with dynamic voice output. The LLM model was given an explanation of the game rules so that, using the current game state, it could return both decisions and cheeky commentary.
Pixelated Art. The art style of the game was mainly about speed and iteration speed. That's why we went with a more comic-like look, brought to life through a dynamic pixelated shader. The 3D environment was built in Blender. Textures and details were hand-drawn in Procreate. The card designs come from artist Dominik Schubert, who spontaneously provided us with the artwork.
